Let’s get a little personal.
Hi! If you’ve been following along my journey thus far, you’ve definitely seen some layers shed. If you’re new, well you’re in for a fun treat! I’ve decided to dedicate this post to fun facts about myself, to help you get to know me on a more personal level. Plus, fun facts are always fun 😉
In no particular order…
Fun Fact #1: I’m adopted.
I think the biggest, fun fact about myself is my story. I’m actually adopted, so it comes to no surprise that I always get questioned on my last name. Hanft. Between questions like How do you pronounce your last name? to Is that even asian?! I actually wrote an article addressing this last year: Why Is Your Last Name Not Asian? where I go into more detail on my story. All in all, I am blessed to have been adopted into a family that loves me dearly and I would never trade anything for the world. I’ve learned that the definition of a true family doesn’t necessarily mean by blood. It’s love.
Fun Fact #2: I’m a black belt in Taekwondo.
I think this is by far my favorite fun fact to tell LOL because a lot of people find it shocking – well maybe almost as shocking as my #1. Quick back story, my brother was invited to a TKD birthday party and eventually got it in his mind that he wanted to join. Me being me, wanted to join to just cause he was. The moment I was told “girls can’t do this” I was determined to sign up and prove that they can. Well, look ma – I made it. I have 1 trophy and 1 plague as an acknowledgement of my hard work and dedication.
Fun Fact #3: I’m Taiwanese.
I was born in Taipei, Taiwan – to be specific. Although I was born there, I lived in NYC practically all of my life. So I guess you can say I’m a twinkie (if you don’t know this term, it basically means I’m whitewashed LOL… yellow on the outside, white on the inside na’mean?)
Fun Fact #4: I always get mistaken for another ethnicity.
Are you Korean? That’s typically the question I get the most. I really don’t see the connection, but sure??? Other popular guesses are: Filipino, Hawaiian, and Vietnamese. People typically assume I’m half white and half Chinese since my father is American and my mom is Taiwanese. Pretty solid assumption though. Another funny guess I’ve gotten, when I was younger, was half black and half Chinese. Sometimes I went along with it and for the longest time a hand select group of people called me Blasian/Blackenese.
Fun Fact #5: I tan VERY easily.
This is probably why I was easily convincing others that I was either Blasian or Filipino. I can be out in the sun for 5 minutes and I get shades darker. When I was younger, I would get pitch black in the summer. There’s actually this one photo that I took with my dad and we are the splitting image of a black and white cookie. I then jokingly earned the name Little Africa. Since then, I stopped going out in the sun at extreme lengths. I’ve typically stayed indoors a lot, to the point where I even had Vitamin D Deficiency for a summer. I think part of my avoiding the sun is hating sunscreen and tan lines.
Fun Fact #5: I can only speak English.
I know, that makes me a very bad Asian. In all honesty, I’m supposed to be trilingual (English, Mandarin, Taiwanese) but I just never really learned the latter. I learned English first, so when my mom attempted to teach the other two dialects, my brother and I made fun of her. “Why are you talking so funny?” haha, so my mom got embarrassed and just quit. I did, however, pick up quite a bit of Mandarin from watching Taiwanese dramas and learning via this phone app I have (Hello Chinese). So, I’m not oblivious. I can understand a chunk, but I can’t speak. As for Taiwanese, I think I know 5 words max.
I had two major accomplishments at the age of 2.
What in earth could a 2 year old accomplish aside from learning to talk or something? Funny story and interesting one. Let’s go with interesting first.
Fun Fact #6: Baby Genius?
Apparently when I was 2, my mom got me a 60 piece puzzle just to play with but I ended up piecing the entire thing together on my own. She was convinced that I was the next Einstein (sorry I failed ya mom). Not sure if this is a huge accomplishment, but I think it’s pretty impressive for a 2 year old.
Fun Fact #7: Drunk at 2.
Yes, you read that right. Drunk at age 2. Now we get to the funny story. It was New Year’s Eve and all the adults left their drinks on the living room coffee table that was conveniently level with my 2 year old self. They were immersed in conversation to the point that they didn’t realize that I downed all the drinks until I was tomato red and wobbly. My mom said that I couldn’t even walk, though I tried. I was both pitiful to look at but also a hysterical sight to see. Needless to say, I spent a good time throwing up and then passing out. LOL…
Fun Fact #8: I can’t eat spicy anything.
Not sure if it’s because I’m allergic or I’m just weak LOL but I can’t handle anything spicy. I’ve worked my tolerance to a very mild spicy, but that’s as high as it really goes to be honest. My face turns red and I’m pretty sure my throat closes up cause I usually start choking/coughing. Not fun. Anyway, I’ll forever be missing out on the latest craze like hot cheetos.
Fun Fact #9: I swear I’ve never blinked before…
When I was younger I had a starting contest with my younger brother. He blinked and lost, but I swore for the longest time that he was the reason why I started blinking. I was convinced that I’ve never blinked a day in my life before I witnessed him blinking and I was so pissed! I found blinking being extremely annoying and I was always nervous that I was “missing” pieces of daily life because of it. I’m pretty sure I was mad at him for a long time. Eventually I got over it and came to realize that I’ve blinked all along. It was a very hard realization that took forever to believe LOL.
Fun Fact #10: I’m allergic to my babies.
If you don’t already know or if you haven’t already seen them sometimes on my Insta Stories, I have 2 precious Holland Lop bunnies: Gunner and Tiger Lilly. They are my furbabies and I love them dearly!! Back story: my apartment doesn’t allow dogs, so I opted to get a bunny. I got Gunner over two years ago. He originally stayed with me in my room. Turns out I’m allergic to him, more specifically I think I’m allergic to an enzyme in his salivia. I ended up moving him to my living room and soon enough discovered that he was sorta lonely.
Fast forward a year or so, I got him a younger sister (cue Tiger Lilly) but instead of being siblings, they actually became lovers (Gunner likes em’ young LOL or poor Lilly likes em seasoned 😂). They have been inseparable ever since they bonded. They are literally the cutest, lovey dovey things ever. In the interim, I’ve become best friends with a lint roller and Benedryl if I really need it.
Hope y’all enjoyed learning a little more about me, hah!
I’d love to hear a fun fact about you!
